Use Memory efficiently by making necessary adjustments

Design software’s often utilizes more space in comparison to others. Same is the case with Photoshop that uses more memory. This is basically because of the high level pixel value and heavy images that are dealt inside. Color variations and modes and changes in them often use more space. Therefore the best way to keep your computer in correct position and shape, it’s better to adjust the memory use by the software.

Many people using Photoshop are not aware about this fact that dealing with the memory usage is within their reach and they can make necessary adjustments as per their requirements.

You need to set memory specifications based on which the efficiency and working capacity of Photoshop can be easily checked in case of image editing. You can have a look at the additional information if you click to right of the information palette that is the document size information (located at footer of the image window). Click on the ‘Scratch Sizes’ to know the value of RAM and scratch disk memory that are in use while during the process of editing an image or any other activity. Choose option named ‘Efficiency’ in order to display the actual action that is if the Photoshop is using the memory from scratch disk or not for performing the tasks of image editing. If the value is less than 100%, it is indicated that if more space from RAM can be made available then operations in Photoshop would be performed at a faster rate. Close all unused images or software for better result and increased efficiency and performance of the software. In case of high resolution images, opened unnecessary, you should be even more careful. This is because extra space is being used without any requirement. Open only file that are needed most.

Cache and Scratch levels in Photoshop

Cache level

Performance of redraw screen and histogram speed is controlled by the use of cache level settings. Screen Redraw in an image refers to the duration that is taken by the image to reappear over the screen when the adjustments are done. If you are performing activities with high resolution images and redraw level gets slower, the redraw speed can be adjusted by raising the cache levels. The cache levels can be increased up to 8 from 6(default setting) in accordance with the required speed. The only drawback of lowering the level of setting is the lesser accuracy of the redraw over the screen images which are not 100% displayed.

Scratch Level

Photoshop needs ample amount of empty hard drive memory in spite of the use of RAM. This is for the ‘scratch disk’ embedded within. Scratch dist is the secondary resource of memory in Photoshop. In order to avoid problems aligned with the memory in Photoshop, better avoid the loss of last gigabytes of the space in the hard drive. If you notice dwindling of the space, take it as a signal for taking back up of whatever you are working on in order or free the additional capacity of the hard drive.

Installation of another hard drive is recommended or you can choose external hard drive too as scratch disk. In case you have 2nd hard drive already installed or accessibility of external drive is needed, then select Preferences> Plug-ins and ‘Scratch Disk’. This way you’ll reach your second scratch disk.

Dealing with Bit depth in Photoshop

Value of one pixel in RGB image’s one channel can be described in computer memory value as 256tones or levels. Calculation and storage of color data in the computer memory takes place with ‘8 bits’. 8 bits, bit (binary digit) is the basic and the smallest unit of the computer’s memory.

Bit Depth: Total amount of bits that describes and records color variations and tone values is called as Bit depth. If there’s a requirement of information on tones without color value, 8 bit image with one channel is sufficient for creating a quality image in black and white tone that reproduces all the variations of the tone required for producing a continuous tone. An image with value of 8-bit handling tonal value and variations only is regarded as Grayscale Image.

If 8 bits are required for each of three RGB image’s channels, the result is regarded as 24-bit image (3 x 8). RGB image in Photoshop is not referred as 24-bit image. It is rather regarded as RGB Color that lists the depth of bit in every channel instead of the whole image, for example 8 Bits/Channel. Higher ‘Bit depth’ in images is symbolic of better color potential and accuracy of tonal value, though it’s not viewed sometimes due to the output device limitations. High bit depth images need more memory and data for storage in the file of image (Images of Grayscale mode are considered as 3rd of the RGB image’s size with similar pint size and pixel dimensions). Photoshop’s support is offered for images with 16 Bits/Channel and 32 Bits/Channel value.

Photoshop design software is an effective tool

Photoshop design software is an organized tool providing an effective interface to the user for controlling process and procedures of editing images. Existing users and professionals dealing must be very much familiar with the complexities of the software. Huge amount of features are embedded within it that you have already dealt but a lot more are still left behind to be explored. So we took the charge to explain a few of them.

Did you ever know that you have been unnecessary spoiling your computer with more data storage in Photoshop? Many of us are not aware about it that this software allows flexibility of playing around with the memory to its users. 512MB or more RAM is sufficient for any system to work efficiently. While installation or performance, Photoshop asks it user to deal with available reserve for RAM. Out of the total assigned amount, 70% of RAM is automatically allotted to Photoshop. Due to this, the speed of the system is likely to get affected. Best way in such situation is to shut all other processes going on. Make sure non essential software are stopped from running then go to ‘Performance’ preference to allocate RAM as per your requirement, seventy percent is advised to start with, rest depends on you. Restart your computer right after changing the settings and it will improve the performance of the software and computer both by successful allocation of memory.

Another technique to save your system from memory problems is to prevent the last gigabytes of your hard disk from being dumped. While the spaces become available, you should start taking back up of your work and empty additional capacity of hard drive. In case you have 2nd hard drive or any additional installed drive then opt another method by going ‘Preferences then Plug-ins and Scratch disks’.

Essential settings before printing an image

Management of colors in Photoshop often creates problems for some. Beginners of the software need to have a mastery over few tools if they wish to gain mastery over the techniques.

Color Gamut

Color Gamut is actually the range of color that varies from each other in different aspects. Inks, dyes and tonners are the key colorants along with quality of the paper that affects the color gamut greatly. It is to be noticed that images that are printed have comparatively smaller ranges of color in comparison to the monitors and the transparency film. You need to consider this aspect before going for printing. Color in the image that are opposite to gamut or masked with the tone of gray. Do not forget that if the default setting of Photoshop that is CMYK is being used in the ink value, the colors cannot be printed in any case. You ought to have RGB mode for them.

Issues concerning management of colors

Obtaining a consistent color from the original one is an important issue especially while being displayed over the monitor. Enabling reproduction while printing - is considerable. Variety of material and devices are used in order to capture, display and then reproduce color for printing. All the activities have some profound effect on the final output.

Distortion of image can be the end result if these settings are not considered beforehand especially in high resolution images where pixels are heavier and can get affected quickly.

Consider all basic settings to give an effective look to the image after printing.

Dealing with Channels and modes in Photoshop

Photoshop is software for creative professionals who play with colors and images along with filters, text and effects. In all the ways, RGB and CMYK play a major role. RGB channels are the prominent one among the two and forms the backbone of the software. It works behind the scenes for creating multicolored drafts and images. This is done through the transfer of information in 3 color sets that are red, green and blue with their respective amounts available in the pixel location. On the workplace, availability of single channel is symbolic of primary color itself that is formed in the window’s image location. And if information of two channels is available then secondary color can be seen.

Secondary colors are formed by the mixture of primary colors, basically any two of them. CMY that is Cyan, Magenta and Yellow are the three basic secondary colors. From among the 3 RGB modes of channels, if color absence is found in any case then the location of the pixel is marked to be black that is regarded as no illumination also. Mixture of RGB Channels results in the creation of gray or white light. It’s gray in case the value of brightness from the 3 Channels is reduced (Levels are self explanatory here). Information of the colors being used in an image can be stored with the use of secondary colors plus K or simply black too which creates the other mode named as CMYK. Images are categorized under this mode too and are regarded as CMYK images. Stored information of the channels components can be viewed by the user with a click on the tab channels palette.

Modes and Channels in Photoshop

Online Photoshop video tutorials are available in abundance but in order to improve skills over better handling of the software you need to be equipped with basic Photoshop facts. Small facts about Photoshop have often proved to be fruitful while creating things quickly and correctly. After basic tools and learning’s you can take your creativity to the next level by learning advance Photoshop tutorials.

One can easily be creative in Photoshop by knowing more about the tools, below are some for your review:

Modes and Channels

White colored light can be created by mixing rainbow colors together (prism splits the white colored light into variety of color components for demonstrating close connection between the color and light). RGB that is Red, Green and Blue, mixing of these three colors only results in the formation of all rainbow colors. RGB are recognized as primary colors of light with varying amounts. Use of basic principle of science can help in capturing and storing all color variation, existing in our present world of creative colors, in the 3 distinct components of the digital imaging file. Component parts in this are Red, Green and Blue itself called as Channels, available along with the layer section. RGB image is the one that stores color data by using this process. RGB is the common type or default ‘Image Mode’.
RGB channels are the most important components and are often recognized as important backbones of the software. Secondary channels are CMYK, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.

Information can be seen in the channels as per convenience that is with the color or without it. Go to Photoshop / Edit > Preference > Display and Cursors. Looking at the information without color within the channel is recommended for beneficial result. This should be while editing for post production is conducted for understanding about the things going on and color is an additional advantage.

Photoshop tips and trick: Color Picker in Photoshop

Photoshop is one of the best ways of playing around with images and colors. Image editing using variety of tools is being practiced by many people for both work and fun. Young adults are very much aware about the software so they keep experimenting effects and filters every now and then. Due to this reason only creative tutorials of all types are become very much popular. Not just this, Photoshop is greatly in demand at the professional grounds too. People are willing to learn professionalism in Photoshop by using creative tutorials and expert’s knowledge. Both are available easily through the online tools where one can easily find easy Photoshop tutorials for learning. Some of them are good enough to learn and develop yourself.

Abiding by the rules of excellent learning, below are few Photoshop facts that you would have been able to find anywhere else. These would help you to become even more professional in using Photoshop effectively.

Color Picker

Appropriate and effective terminology is necessary while describing color for digital domain. The most important components categorized under this are HSB that is Hue, Saturation and Brightness. Use color picker for checking the colors being used in the image.

Move to Color Picker, then go to foreground swatch of tools palette.

Hue: Choose the color that you need in the vertical color bar (often placed in the color picker’s center) in order to view the color ranges from that range of hue. Do consider the number available next to radio button ‘H’ over the top. The 6 primary along with secondary colors are placed exactly at distance of 60 degree among them starting from 0°Red then 60° Yellow then 120° Green and so on. A specific degree or number is assigned to every hue which between 0°-360°. Other values of Saturation and Brightness remain unaffected by any changes being made in the other bar.

Saturation and Brightness: For choosing the values of brightness and saturation, select the larger squared shaped box positioned in the left side of the bar. Increase in saturation results when the circle selected is pushed towards the rightward direction of the box and lowers down when the same is moved towards left. Similar is the case with brightness but in slightly different way. It increases when moved towards the top and lowers when moved at the bottom side of the box. With any of the changes, hue remains unaffected.

Special Monitor Calibration for Images

Color of every monitor differs from one another. This is due to the default settings that are organized differently in each of the system. Variation in their color is the result of its setting only which is not same even in monitors of same model. Calibration manages the standard color display by directing attempts towards the settings of monitor. It helps in preventing images that often look different in different monitors. Monitor calibration device is embedded inside the monitor that can be used for adjustments or else an external tool can also assist which is in the form of software known as “Mac” or “Monitor Calibrator”, also recognized as Adobe Gamma (PC).

While using CRT monitors, care is to be maintained before the start up of calibration process. Let the image stabilize after switching on the monitor which should be left for around half an hour. Then the calibration software should be used for setting the contrast, brightness, color temperature and gamma settings of the monitor. Appearance of the image would be similar on any calibrated screen and your screen. Monitor calibration ensures that the prints developed by you would be similar to the image on screen. In case of an accurate profile printer, the appearance would enhance in a better way.

If you are using Macintosh OSX, then move in this order, “System Preferences > Displays > Color > Calibrate”. In case its Windows Operating system, then go for ‘Adobe Gamma’ software that can be located in control panel. After selecting it from there, your ‘Target White Point’ (also named as ‘Target White Point’ or ‘Hardware White Point’ or ‘Adjusted White Point’) should be adjusted at 6500. Software is a guide to the user for making adjustments. Lately calibrated settings in monitor should be stored after the completion of process with a separate profile name. Keep a check over the date on which the calibration process is carried out. Repeat the process after duration of 6 months.
